A 33 tooth 64 pitch pinion gear with Kyosho's Velvet Coating treatment.

The pinion sits on the motor shaft and, with the spur, sets the final drive ratio. On a 64 pitch touring car drivetrain that ratio is the main lever you have for matching the car to a track: more teeth gears the car taller for top speed on long straights, fewer gears it down for acceleration out of tight corners and lower motor temperatures.

64 pitch is a fine tooth pitch used in high-speed on-road classes. The finer teeth mesh more smoothly and run quieter than 48 pitch, and they let you change ratio in single-tooth steps for genuinely precise gearing. The trade-off is that individual teeth are smaller and less tolerant of a bad mesh.

Velvet Coating is a surface treatment applied to the gear face. Kyosho's stated purpose on their coated pinion range is to increase durability and reduce friction loss, which on a fine-pitch gear matters because the contact area per tooth is small.

Kyosho lists this pinion for the TF7 and TF7.7. Always reset gear mesh after fitting a new pinion.
